What a safety recall is

A recall is issued when a manufacturer or a safety authority finds that a vehicle (or a batch of them) has a defect that affects safety, or does not meet a safety standard. The repair is carried out by an authorised dealer and is free of charge, even on a used car and even outside warranty.

  • The fix is free — the manufacturer pays
  • Recalls apply to used cars too, regardless of owner
  • You do not need to be the first owner
  • Ignoring a recall can be dangerous and may affect resale

Why check by VIN when you can

A make / model / year search is a good start, but a VIN identifies the exact build and the specific campaign that applies to it. Decode the VIN first with the VIN decoder, then check the recall here — or search by VIN directly in this tool.

  • Search by make, model and model year for a quick overview
  • Search by VIN for a precise match
  • Look for the Do not drive or Park outside warnings first

Coverage and other countries

This tool uses the NHTSA database, which covers vehicles sold in the United States. Recalls for Europe, the UK and other regions are issued by the manufacturer or the national authority — check the brand recall portal or your dealer with the VIN.

  • US: NHTSA (this tool)
  • EU/UK: manufacturer or national authority
  • Always confirm with the brand using the VIN

FAQ

Yes. Recalls and safety-related service campaigns are performed free of charge by an authorised dealer, including labour and parts, even on a vehicle you bought used.
No recall on record does not guarantee there is no fault. It means the vehicle is not covered by a published campaign in that database. Any safety defect can still be reported to the authority.
The NHTSA database covers the United States. A European-market vehicle of the same name may use different components and is tracked by the manufacturer or EU authorities instead.
Do not drive: stop using the vehicle and contact a dealer immediately. Park outside: park away from buildings because of a fire risk until the recall is repaired.
