Prevent Engine Overheating: 5 Cooling System Checks
Engine overheating can lead to costly repairs. These five simple checks help you catch cooling system issues early and keep your engine running cool.
The expert tip
- Check coolant level monthly when the engine is cold; top up with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water if it's below the MIN mark.
- Inspect the radiator cap for cracks or a worn seal every 6 months; a faulty cap can prevent the system from holding pressure and cause overheating.
- Test the coolant's freezing and boiling points with a hydrometer annually; replace coolant every 2 years or 30,000 miles, whichever comes first.
- Look for leaks under the car and around hoses, radiator, and water pump; even a small drip can lead to significant coolant loss.
- Ensure the cooling fan engages when the engine reaches operating temperature; if it doesn't, check the fan relay and fuse.
- Keep the radiator fins clean by gently spraying water from the back to remove bugs and debris, especially before summer.
